Rockland Bird Sanctuary

Description

The Rockland Bird Sanctuary, located in the lush hills of Anchovy, a small community approximately 25 minutes out of Montego Bay, was established by Lisa Salmon, one of Jamaica’s first environmentalists – fondly known as ‘the bird lady’.

The bird-feeding facility is now run and managed by Lisa’s nephew, Fritz, who has been working at the bird sanctuary for over 20 years and has a gift for spotting and summoning the birds which dwell in the surrounding trees.

Rockland Bird Sanctuary is an exotic and interactive bird sanctuary that takes you close to some of the most fascinating sights and sounds from the avian world. This bird sanctuary serves as a home to over 1000’s of exotic birds from more than 50 species of birds in their natural habitat and vibrant flora. Take a stroll in this vast bird sanctuary and soothe your senses amidst the bountiful nature – observing the unique set of colorful, melodic birds flying about freely in beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Jamaica is believed to have over 200 species of birds, which most can be found at the sanctuary at Rocklands.

For most people the highlight of a visit to Rocklands is the chance to hand feed hummingbirds from the patio. Several species of hummingbird (including the doctor bird, Jamaica’s national bird) are tame enough to fly down from the trees, perch on your finger and drink nectar from a bird feeder. Finches and quits will also come to eat millet seed from your hand.

Visitors get to feed, wild, uncaged, colorful hummingbirds and other species by hand (if they cooperate), see other wild birds come to feeders on a patio, in our cottage garden.

The Sanctuary is an ideal place to visit for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts along with their families. The Sanctuary plays a crucial role in preserving the endangered wildlife of Jamaica by breeding many birds.
